How does a belt conveyor work?
An electric motor drives the drive pulley. Friction between the pulley and the belt creates the traction force that moves the belt and continuously transports material.
Where does a belt conveyor get its power?
Normally, an electric motor transmits power through a gearbox and coupling to the drive pulley. Larger systems may use multiple coordinated drives.
How is material loaded and discharged?
Material is usually fed at the tail zone or at a transfer point. It is discharged when the belt passes around the head pulley and the material falls by gravity and inertia into a hopper, chute or the next equipment.
Can a belt conveyor work on an incline?
Yes. The allowable incline depends on the material, moisture, particle size, angle of repose and belt type. Steeper angles may require chevron belts, sidewall belts or special solutions.
How is stable operation maintained over long distances?
It requires a proper take-up system, correctly arranged and aligned idlers, appropriate drive configuration, belt alignment control and a design adapted to the distance, elevation and material.
Why can a belt conveyor operate continuously?
Because the belt forms a closed loop between the head and tail pulleys. As long as the drive system maintains traction and components are properly adjusted, material flow can remain continuous.
